The Problem with Drinking in Costa Rica

Drinking, working and living in Costa Rica just seem to go hand-in-hand...

Or maybe it's just me.

Here's the problem(s). I(we) live in paradise. EVERYDAY is a vacation day or at the very least, a Friday or Saturday. Seriously, everyday. And although we work hard, we also work for ourselves so there's no one telling us we can't extend lunch for 5 hours, so in essence, everyday has the potential to be an extended, neverending 'Happy Hour'. And as you might imagine, we meet a LOT of tourists, and guess what, they're on vacation too, so we're not opposed to showing our Costa Rican guests a good time. Pura Vida. Not sure if we've ever said, "no" to a beer.

Vacation is one thing, living here is another.... here's our video about DRUNKer in Costa Rica. ENjoY!

During my last vacation in Costa Rica about one and half years ago, I had learn the most important aspect of lifestyle in there! work hard through out the day and booze harder at parties in night. Amazing lifestyle! I liked it.
Hahaha. This video makes me want to go grab a 6 pack of Rock Ice! When I first moved to Costa Rica this happened to me, drinking with tourist and so on. Everyday is a vacation. Until I put on 30 pounds, drinking ,eating and not being active as I should be. I stopped about two years ago and hit the gym. I only drinking on occasions like when friends come down from the states, New Years, a party or once in awhile durning football season. I actully drink a lot less than I did in the states, but not at first. Weed sucks here, so that's not a problem. This ain't California when it comes to pot! Headache weed! No need for it.

Probably not as bad as what was available in the 60's. You guys are spoiled by the cuurent weed, estimated at about 20 to 40 times more potent.
You are not making the right connection GOOD WEED can be had if you just take the time to develop the connections. I know, I spend a lot of time in cr.

agreed, spend much time in c.r and it takes time and networking to find "the good stuff" sometimes you will find it by trial and error, but there is some really "good stuff around" and as far as the drinking, yes you have to be careful as it gets very tempting to drink all day and night lol I was there for 1 month once and went thru 2-3 bottles of alcohol per week lol
You are exploring one of the downsides of having too much time and money. I always said if my kids did not have too much time and too much money they could not get into too much trouble. You read about it all the time about guys retires to CR and starts the day at 11am at the bar. I think it is hard to adjust from 9-5, M-F in a cubical to being free ... beforehand your time and money were spoken for and you could no start drinking at 11am.

My day was 8am to at least 8pm. Problem was I loved what I was doing. I am having to move to avoid being trapped in that again, because I'm 65yo, and although I don't feel that I am 65, my body is starting to remind me. A friend who grew up in Costa Rica and is totally current on events there, wants me to move there to avoid that trap, and I'm very seriously thinking about taking his advice.
LOL! Wasn't hard at all for me to adjust from 8-6 days in a cube or on the road, but then I left my heavy drinking days decades behind me. There's plenty to do here and no need to numb myself. Do like the occasional beer, though. Just wish most of it was better down here.
