Vamos 4X4 Responds to Pitfalls of Renting a Car in Costa Rica

Renting a car in Costa Rica can be HAZARDOUS to your wallet for a variety of reasons.

And when I say, 'hazardous', I mean it as more the RULE than the EXCEPTION. It's true, many car rental agencies in Costa Rica have become so deceptive, we decided to make a video about, 'Avoiding the Pitfalls of Renting a Car in Costa Rica' because for us, we can't imagine anything worse than debarking the plane, excited about your upcoming adventures in Costa Rica, only to find out when you pick up your rental car that there's literally hundreds of dollars in hidden costs. Talk about a budget BUZZKILL.

Anyway, I think the video came out well, it's informative and if you're planning on experiencing Costa Rica by rental car, you'd be remiss if you didn't watch it. And as LUCK would have it, it's embedded BELOW.

But really, that's not the point of this post. The point is, we actually got a video response to our video by one of the car rental agencies here, Vamos 4X4. *Now, it should be noted, we use Vamos and have even done a video about them before, but we didn't tell them about this video nor did we ask them to respond. They just did and we thought that was pretty COOL. Seriously, how many car rental agencies would take the time to respond, via video no less... obviously just ONE.

Check it out. The first video is ours, 'Avoiding the Pitfalls of Renting a Car in Costa Rica' and then the Vamos response. Seriously, don't miss this if you plan on renting a car while in Costa Rica.

Yup,,,,,definitely.
What are the driving conditions typically like in Costa Rica? And what are the drivers like themselves i.e. how do they drive?

Aloha Will and Michael Allen,

I have been checking out your youtube videos, including this one. I was in CR back in 88' and 89'. Vehicle rental has always been expensive then, and it sounds like it got worst. However, because of your videos. I do plan to try Vamos 4x4.com. I will let you know how it goes. Hope to maybe meet you guys as well with my fence.

One question. Your guest on the video said "Don't give your CC info to hold the vehicle. " So what is it? Do or don't?

Mahalo,
SR
Thanks for your video! I've seen quite a few of these points scattered across various sources as I was doing my research on car rental. I really liked having a secondary confirmation of it all, and all wrapped up together in one spot! I have a better handle on the extra costs now, so I can be prepared ahead of time.
And loved the response from Vamos 4x4... I was already leaning toward renting from them, and their response really cemented my decision. :)
We rented from VAMOS in December/January 2014. Words cannot express enough how impressed we were with their customer service. The first car we got , Suzuki Jimmy, was having some problems. They swapped out without any issues and upgraded us to a Toyota Rav4 for our entire 2 week trip at no additional charge. In fact, they gave us a free day because of the hassle. Also, American Airlines lost 4 of our bags. Fanny, at the VAMOS travel center, tried working with them to deliver the bags to us. They were willing to deliver our bags to us even though we were 3 hours away. Everyone at VAMOS was incredibly friendly and helpful. We had a great experience with them and would highly recommend them to others!!

First of all, I can't tell you how nice it was on this freezing cold, snowy Colorado morning, to watch you both sitting outside with your coffee and hearing the sounds of birds and water in the background. I had already heard great things about Vamos on TripAdvisor but wanted more assurance before reserving a car. I am now convinced! Thanks for the great video. On Vamos's response video, it says something about a discount for mentioning that you saw the Michael Alan video. I wasn't sure what that was until I watched your another video on your site regarding car rentals. For anyone else who might be wondering - it is free GPS rental when you mention to Vamos that you saw the videos on this site. Thanks again!
Vamos is sold out of 4x4's, what else do you suggest?
I rented from Vamos4x4 in March 2014. Reserved a new Rav 4, ended up with a 2011 beat up Montenaro. The suspension was about to give on the front right side. I also had to pay a $2,000 deposit, that's more than I ever had to pay before and I have rented brand new BMW's that didn't have that kind of deposit. Overall a good experience, except the cell phone is not complementary to use it as a real cell phone costs you $5/day. The so called "free" one only lets you call Vamos. The GPS isn't free either, that's $7/day.
