I'm not saying you couldn't ENjoY Costa Rica in a wheelchair, but...
...if you're traveling alone or with friends or family in a wheelchair, you better either be on your 'game' like the guy in the pic or really, really do your homework as to where, which tour companies and adventures are wheelchair friendly. Costa Rica is getting better at being more handicap and older folks friendly in the busiest places in Costa Rica but no where near where they need to be. But if you really, really want to visit Costa Rica and you are older, have health issues or handicapped in some way, I would go with a travel company that caters to such. Here's my video about the subject. Check it out or at least watch the ending, kinda funny.

Truth is, it's hard to find good steak in Costa Rica. AND if you do, it's usually overpriced, such is the case in La Fortuna. It's here but it's usually gringo priced and definitely not as good as what you would find in the States (Have you ever eaten at 'Prime' at the Belligio in Las Vegas). Sorry, having a flashback. Anyway, when we found this little 'local' place not 5-minutes from the center of town that served a better-than-average steak for 8 bucks..... well, we just had to make a video. *If you ever find yourself in La Fortuna, check out 'Garra Pata' and tell the owner we sent you... just might get a better price... just maybe.

This is a VIDEO about the exchange rate and currency in Costa Rica.
First off, I know a LOT of travel books and resource information websites on the internet recommend you exchange your money when you first fly into Costa Rica. *This post(video) applies mainly to folks coming from the US, the rest of you really do need to exchange your money. That may have been true at one time but not so much now. Almost anyplace YOU go in Costa Rica accepts American money although it is true you will most likely receive change back in 'colones', which is part of the reason you don't have to exchange, you'll receive plenty of change in the local currency.
Actually, just CHECK this video out, it explains it all and is definitely a MUST SEE if you're coming to Costa Rica and don't know much about their money. ENjoY and hope it helps.

Renting a car in Costa Rica? Then you don't want to MISS these very INFORMATIVE videos.
All car rental agencies in Costa Rica are NOT created equal regardless of how recognizable their names may be in the States. So by the time you sign on the dotted line it could literally be hundreds more than you expected and can put a serious crimp on your travel plans, especially if you budget is tight. Don't miss this INFO and double especially the first video. It's a little long but loaded with relevant information that you need to KNOW.
*The only bit of INFO I probably would have mentioned in the first video is to really check-over your car, make sure everything works and note ALL scratches, dents, broken parts etc so there's no problems when you return the car. This has been known to be a problem with dishonest agents.
This next video is about a SCAM that's been run on unexpecting tourists for a LONG time but is totally avoidable for those in the know.
We like Vamos 4x4. But we're definitely not saying they're the only game in town. We stick with what we like. Check out the video to see why we like them.

Obviously, based on the comments and private emails I received, I did a lousy job of explaining why I said what I said. I apologize for being a little 'general', but I stand by what I said about the over all service tourists receive while visiting Costa Rica. It does borderline on SucKs!
Let me explain.
The video is/was meant for tourists, not those who live here.
It doesn't really apply to backpackers or those people who travel off the beaten path.
BUT, it is for those folks who hit the more 'touristy' destinations in Costa Rica- Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, La Fortuna, Puerto Viejo, Samara, Montezuma, Malpais and I suppose San Jose.
The fact is, these places are tourist towns for the most part that CHARGE tourist prices. You would really have to do your homework in order to find bargain prices in these touristy towns. Rooms can reach VEGAS prices, ditto for food. So, I'm not talking little mom and pop sodas or small B&B's, this video is for those people who mostly follow the guide books and/or TripAdvisor- the more popular tourist places where Tico's would rarely go... and for good reason.
It's simple- Tourist prices without the service to match the price. Do you want to pay $220 per night but wait an hour for an extra towel? Want to pay gringo prices for a steak but can't get a beer for 30 minutes... or get said beer from some guy who clearly would rather be doing something else... but it is what it is and what it is, IS an indifference of sorts. Shouldn't you expect decent service when you're paying 'back home' prices? And let's just say this issue of sucky service pertains to a VERY large percentage of tourist hotels and restaurants in Costa Rica. *Try this if you're ever in Costa Rica eating at a Tico owned restaurant- obviously don't lie, but if the steak sucks, complain appropriately and report back to me what happens...
So, it's rare when promptness, friendly service and quality of product come together to match the 'gringo' price being charged. Keeping the above in mind, here's the video in question.
In Summary- Don't expect to much in the way of service but if you get good service, COOL. Embrace the Pura Vida while you're here and seriously, do you really need to stay at a Ritz Carlton type of place in Costa Rica or eat a $50. steak? I think not. Downsize everything, including your gringo expectations.

Costa Rica is known for MANY things but good SERVICE is NOT one of them.
Service, or lack there of, would be defined as- prompt, personable and how feedback is dealt with. Read the latter as 'what happens when the steak sucks'. Rarely do all of these things come together in Costa Rica.
Chalk it up to anything you want- 'Pura Vida' attitude, laziness, nonchalance or the fact most Costa Ricans make about $3. bucks an hour... whatever, but the fact remains the same- Costa Ricans are NOT very service oriented. *However, it should be noted that the BEST service in Costa Rica comes from Gringo operated establishments- WORD. Reason being, gringos understand the importance repeat customers, TripAdvisor, and the faster they get you a beer, the more money they make.
After 7 years of living in Costa Rica, I've concluded it's just not in their genes.
Here's our VIDEO about the service in Costa Rica:
In the beginning, coming from Las Vegas, it was hard to accept their overall nonchalance about service. To me, it came across as out and out RUDE. But now my attitude is different and like many things I've had to adjust too, I've come to embrace it. My expectations are low and I simply enjoy whatever I'm doing and when the drink does finally arrive, I appreciate it all the more. Now don't get me wrong, I prefer Las Vegas type service but here in Costa Rica, there's not much you can do about it, so you eventually learn to live with it... or not. And for the RECORD- the 'or not' types don't usually last long in Costa Rica.
My TIP- don't.

Costa Rica has MORE than its fair share of bugs, spiders, snakes and other nondescript creepy-crawlies. To many, that's just Costa Rica and comes with the territory, to others, it's their worst nightmare. We know, we receive more than a few emails from those who are SCARED to death of the possibility of encountering a rabid, steroided, flying whatchamacallit while traveling around Costa Rica. So they write and ask if they should be worried... because they really want to come and all, but not if the odds are good they'll come face to face with a grasshopper the size of a baby kitten. You can tell by the tone of their emails that our answer could be a deal breaker.
Just one of the reasons you want to stay ON the trail.
We understand their concern and made this video to put your mind at ease.

Us and our friends go to 'Just Good Food' in La Fortuna Costa Rica when we want a cheap, good meal.
Finding good, CHEAP food in La Fortuna Costa Rica can sometimes be a difficult task this being a tourist town and all but after living here for 6 years we've managed to find a few places. One such place, almost in the center of town, is called, 'Just Good Food'.
We're not talking gourmet here, we're talking good food at some of the cheapest prices in Costa Rica. I'm not saying the service is always top notch and we have had a not-so-good meal there, but 9 times out of 10 we've been happy, especially when we get the bill and double especially when we leave with a doggy bag.
NO, it's not all natural but it will fill you up at a reasonable price with some leftover for breakfast.
Traveling on a budget and/or don't want to pay an arm and a leg 'Just Good Food' might be a great option.... Check OUT our video for, 'Just Good Food':

Our VIDEO about sex and prostitution in Costa Rica got a *WARNING* from the folks at YouTube and it dropped out of the 'searches' because of it. Not that it deserved a 'warning' mind you, since it's purely informative and not even close to being x-rated or provocative (and don't even get me started about other videos found on Youtube with thousands of views that have been posted for years and are totally inappropriate which of course have no such 'warning') but we're pretty sure we have a jealous ex-business partner trying to make things difficult for us... but I digress.
In case you missed it, here's a re-post and video about Sex and Prostitution in Costa Rica:
'San Jose, Costa Rica where SEX and Prostitution particularly flourish.'
In Costa Rica, sex with girls, sex with gay boys, sex with trannies, even 'gay for pay' is VERY much LEGAL, and BELIEVE ME, the SEX trade industry in Costa Rica is as diverse as the country itself.
'Straight or GAY sex is easy to find in Costa Rica.'
Legal age of consent for BOTH straight sex and gay sex is 18. I would CAUTION you to be very careful, there's TONS of misinformation on the internet pertaining to the legal age of consent here, many sites will tell you it's as low as 15. We'll get back to 'age' later.
To most, Costa Rica is about active volcanoes, beautiful beaches, lush rain forest, abundant wildlife, raging rapids and an adventure LOVERS paradise... and it is. But many who come here could care less about seeing a sloth or rappelling down a waterfall, for them, Costa Rica means SEX.... and lets be truthful, Costa Rica does sell SEX just as well as it does a zipline tour.
Okay, so what, prostitution is legal in Costa Rica. Well, just because it's LEGAL doesn't mean it's not rife with problems. THINK about any issue you could have with illegal prostitution in the STATES or anywhere else prostitution is NOT legal and I can assure you, those problems EXIST here as well- with the exception of actually propositioning for sex.
Make NO mistake, drugs, crime, petty theft, STD's, AIDS, underage SEX, illegal prostitutes and sex slavery are ALL problems here. Of course these issues usually EXIST in varying degrees where ever prostitution is found- legal or NOT.
For years, Costa Rica had the dubious distinction of being one of the top destinations for partaking in underage SEX. Although they've taken steps to combat this problem, at least on the surface, it is STILL a concern here. If you get caught participating in sex with a minor, you're pretty much rightfully FUCKED... and rest assured, not in a GOOD way. But unfortunately, like most laws in Costa Rica the 'bark' is often worse than the 'bite' and enforcement is a problem, so how often some 'Chester the Molester' type is arrested and convicted for having sex with a minor is anyone's guess. Mine, is NOT very many... just sayin.
The other problem, most of the prostitutes (at least the girls) aren't even Tica's- most are Dominicans, Colombians, Nicaraguans and even Eastern Europeans. My question to you... how many of these illegal girls are actually going to register as a prostitute and keep their health card updated?
REMEMBER, just because prostitution is legal in Costa Rica- you're still responsible and PLAYING at your own RISK. Condoms are a GIVEN and speaking to your Doctor about Hepatitis is highly recommended.
So, you want to come to Costa Rica for SEX, but not sure where to find EXACTLY what you're LOOKING for. Let's pretend you don't know how to write in the GOOGLE search bar combinations of the following words, depending: 'Costa Rica, San Jose, sex, adult entertainment, escorts, prostitution, gay, girls, brothels, big tits,....whatever' or you don't know Craigslist is valuable resource if you're looking for sex, ANYWHERE. Fine, all you need to know is get in any taxi and BELIEVE ME, they'll take you wherever it IS you want to GO, you might consider beginning with the Del Rey Hotel and Casino.
Here's our VIDEO about SEX and Prostitution in Costa Rica:
Vamos 4X4 is a car rental agency here in Costa Rica and boy, have we got a lot of emails over the last few years asking about them. This is a PERFECT example:

All you really need to know is, Ceiba, basically means BIG ASS TREE.
This Ceiba tree is located about 10 minutes from Nuevo Arenal if you were heading to La Fortuna, which makes it about 35 minutes away from La Fortuna. There is a sign but you could miss it if you weren't looking or didn't know about the tree beforehand.
Truthfully, from a distance, this Ceiba tree doesn't appear that impressive. For one, it sits atop a hill and appears smaller, being somewhat swallowed up by the surrounding sky. And even within a 50 yards you're thinking, ...doesn't seem all that BIG.
But when you get right up on it,,,you can feel its MAGNIFICENCE.
Trust me, this tree is impressive and if you're not taken by it's size, you'll be taken by its aura. This is a tree Robert Frost or Thoreau would write about. You can definitely FEEL its presence. For me, this tree stirs some serious emotion and it's almost a little too much...
Anyway, if you get a chance, check it out and experience its presence, if you're into things like this, it's worth a stop.

Driving in Costa Rica is as much an adventure as any white water rafting tour or waterfall rappel through the rainforest and if you've ever driven here, you already know that. And not just for the obvious reasons such as road and weather conditions but also for the fact Tico's are some of the worst drivers on the PLANET... yeah, I said it.
Anyway, we made a video called, 'Driving Costa Rica' a couple years back when really, we were newbies to the video making genre. That video is the second one down on this page.
We received a LOT of negative comments on that video, from 'threats' to just out and out name calling..."FAGGETS go HOME and Butt F*** each other if you don't like Costa Rica." I would often respond by politely pointing out that the comment would have hurt a little more if they had actually spelled 'faggot' correctly.
Anyway, we did come to understand why they were a little peeved... it was our delivery. We came across a little flippant... and we did.
Finally, we made part 2 of that video (which is directly below) to set the record straight, but not only set the record straight but to emphasize a couple points the first video did not.
There you have it. Planning on seeing Costa Rica by car, you need to CHECK OUT both videos. ENjoY! and as always, hope it helps.

There may be no STUPID Questions, but there sure can be some SKETCHY answers.
The FACT is, most of you already know what I'm about to tell you. But it also seems to be true that it's quickly forgotten when you need to remember it the most.
Here's how it goes:
You ask your (Fill in the Blank) Costa Rica tour operator, taxi driver, waiter, bartender, travel agent, friendly gringo next to you in the restaurant, whoever for INFO regarding anything- BEST restaurant in the area, best tour company, where to go, what to do, something about buying real estate in Costa Rica etc. I'm sure you get the picture.
Nine times out of ten their answer has AGENDA written all over it.
We made this video so you would remember to file away this little tidbit of INFO in the back of your brain somewhere when you're traveling around Costa Rica.
Hope it helps:

Gay or straight, if you're OUT partying in Costa Rica you'll need to know this.
*Sorry girls, this is mostly a guy thing since when it comes to the possibility of having a sexual encounter guys tend to think with the wrong head- what can I say, you're smarter.
Hey Guys! I've seen this happen personally and have heard about it often enough to know it can be a problem... and it doesn't matter if you're dancing with the boys in a gay club such as La Avispa or doing shots in one of the many 'straight' bars and discos located inside El Pueblo, you need to be AWARE of this little, how should I say, distraction.
First, it's a vacation for god sake, it's not difficult to understand how the following scenario could play out... but when you ENTER alcohol and/or other party favors, inhibition seems to get tossed aside like a $2.00 hooker (now that's a bargain basement inhibition) and as euphoria (or inebriation) sets in, simple problem solving may as well be quantum physics. Read that as, your dick doesn't do math.
But who cares, chillin' and partying in Costa Rica , right now, all is right with the world. Until...
...the man or woman of your dreams begins to dance with you.
"WTF? How HOT is this... so 'out of my league' but dancing with me, ...ME, SWEET!"
Enter- quantum physics.
"Whatever, I'm going to just ride this out and see where it goes...... fuck it, I'm on vacation in Costa Rica BABY!"
"Nice, feeling all over my ass.... whoaaa, comin' around the front.... I must be looking HoT tonight."
Sober, red flags would fly as soon as 'wet dream' began to dance with you since hook-ups are only this E-Z in the movies, that is, unless you PAID for said 'wet dream'- that's a different kinda movie.
One of two things is about to happen- Pick-pocketed right there on the dance floor by 'wet dream' or an accomplice OR taken outside and mugged when you had something a little HOTTER in mind.
Sorry guys, Beauty and the Beast rarely happens, it's an exception and you are NOT it.
But I understand, every once in awhile it's nice when quantum physics makes sense,,,, at least for a few moments that is.
Party Pointers: Taxi from club to club, don't walk anywhere. Don't party or go out alone if you can help it. Be careful as to how fucked-up you get. Carry only the money you need for the night and your I.D./passport. Keep nothing in your back pocket. If you must carry a credit card, hide it, ditto for your passport. Tell SOMEONE or EVERYONE your basic itinerary for the night, even if it's just updating your status on FB or Twitter but let SOMEONE know and double especially if you're going out solo- the hotel receptionist is a good start. Personally, I carry a switchblade, even into the clubs, but that's me... yeah, I hide it. And remember, keep a healthy skepticism when someone approaches you from out of the blue and is either overly flirtatious or somewhat aggressive when attempting to pick you up. *They could just be a prostitute working too hard.
And lastly, don't forget the condoms, after all, I could be wrong and this could be your LUCKY night.
"Yeah, right."

I can't believe we've lived in Costa Rica for 5 years and hadn't been to Volcan Poas or La Paz- not even once. *Our VIDEOS of La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Volcan Poas are BELOW.
I'm a BIG fan of volcano's and although I believe the Arenal Volcano in our neck of the woods, (La Fortuna), is hard to beat with it's magnitude, sheer beauty (especially at sunset) and ever-erupting ways, Volcan Poas is also worth a look see. But like the Arenal Volcano, the Poas Volcano isn't always 'out' and is often covered over in a misty fog and/or cloud coverage. I would say go to Poas first, the chances of a decent VIEW are better in the morning and then venture over to La Paz for rest of the afternoon. If you hike over to the 'other' lagoon at Poas, I think you'll be impressed with the trail, the foliage is VERY mossy-COOL there, so don't miss out if you're into vegetation and lushness. Actually, it's almost sp@@ky.
TIP: the souvenir shop at Volcan Poas National Park is stupid expensive, go elsewhere for your wooden toucan,'Made in Columbia' and magnetic tree frog.
The trail from the Poas Volcano viewing area to the lagoon.
We were pleasantly surprised by La Paz Waterfall Gardens. A little 'zooey' for our taste, but they also mix 'zoo-like' with the 'natural' and it's a convenient place to go if you don't have a lot of time in Costa Rica to see the animals or perhaps you're older and need a more senior citizen friendly place to visit.
D'Angelo's new found skill: the 'Hummingbird Whisperer'.
I particularly liked the hummingbird garden... and the ocelots... and the toucans... and the waterfalls... and for about 10 minutes we even discussed (and rationalized) why we should steal the kinkajou and take it home with us.
The kinkajou. In the video D'Angelo gives him a massage, so CUTE.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Volcan Poas are worth it, especially if you're stuck in San Jose with nothing to do or you just don't have enough time to see the animals in their natural habitats.
Here's our VIDEOS:

It took us almost 2 years to find a Travel Agency we were comfortable working with, since in our VIEW, our reputation IS basically ALWAYS on the line. But hooking up with the folks at Gecko Trails has seriously put our mind to ease.
We just don't have the time to put together Costa Rica Travel packages, yet anyway,or answer ALL the travel emails we receive on a daily basis. When traveling to Costa Rica, there's just some things that are NICE to know .... just in case.
And this is one of those kind of tips.
To me, researching a country before traveling to it is half the fun.... and usually, the MORE prepared you are, the better the experience will be. We would ALWAYS encourage anyone interested in traveling to Costa Rica to CHECK-OUT the tons of Costa Rica Travel INFO and VIDEOS we have on our sites (links to the right)... and not just our STUFF- but other peoples sites as well, for even more perspective.
*Stay away from sites which seem to have an agenda, such as selling YOU real estate or who continuously promote the 'Costa Rica = Paradise' perception without ever mentioning some of the problems one may incur while traveling and/or living in said, 'PARADISE'.
And trust me, these 'agenda' sites are the NORM. Really, there's only a handful of Costa Rica websites that actually tell you the TRUTH about Costa Rica- here's one you can start with (after ours of course): Costa Rica Blogger. So remember, BEWARE when doing your research.
D'Angelo and myself made this short video to provide a bit of 'insider' Costa Rican INFO which is useful to know when traveling around the country, especially if you're doing so on a budget, but really, good INFO regardless.
Costa Ricans are a practical people. This is a practical TRAVEL TIP, brought to you by 2 fairly impractical guys:
