La Fortuna Costa Rica GO HERE

There's no disputing that their is a TON of things to do in La Fortuna- rafting, ziplining, ATV, horseback, bike, rappelling, hiking, lake adventures, you name it, it's probably here for you to do. But prices vary. We found a place where you can get some hiking in, see some animals, waterfall and you're literally right next to the volcano and it's NOT expensive. So we think it's worth mentioning. And we do, in this video. ENjoY!

Wild Animal Rescue Fortuna Costa Rica

Me and a parentless, baby howler monkey.

Costa Rica has animals, really cool, eXotic animals- sloths, macaws/parrots, iguanas, monkeys and about 135 species of snakes, just to name a few. Many people love exotic animals, so much in fact, they want to keep them as pets. These people usually have no idea as to how to care for them. Needless to say, as the 'wild' animals start becoming adults, they tend to act just how they are- wild. Most folks don't manage 'wild' very well. Luckily there's a few places around Costa Rica who take in these wild, semi- domesticated animals and try to acclimate them back into their natural habitat. La Fortuna has such a place.

D'Angelo and I recently visited it. Check it out.

And of course one of our favorite animal rescue centers- Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo.

BEST ATV Tour in Costa Rica

The BEST ATV Tour in Costa Rica has to be the one in La Fortuna and "NO", it's NOT La Pradera, (not that you've really heard of that one either) but La Pradera does happen to be the BIGGEST and the one you usually run into on the internet but just NOT the BEST. Obviously we haven't been on every ATV tour in Costa Rica and their could be other great ones, so yeah, 'BEST' might be a little overly dramatic but believe me, this one I just went on is about 5-steps above most. And the fact that many are just average is the reason we've never really endorsed one before.

So, here's the SC@@P- When D'Angelo returns from visiting relatives in New York we will make the video and you'll see why we say what we do. In the meantime, if you're going to be in La Fortuna and are interested... let us know. Pura Vida!

La Fortuna Costa Rica Boring as F**K

La Fortuna Costa Rica, boring as FUCK.

To the folks at 'Open Road Travel Guide' and specifically, 'Open Road's Best of Costa Rica' Travel Book,

You wrote this about La Fortuna Costa Rica:
Boring Fortuna. Fortuna is an uninteresting tourism-support town, which is useful for booking tours but not much else. Stay somewhere closer to the volcano, where you might see some action if the clouds ever clear up. The interesting places to stay are on the way to the lake, towards the town of Nuevo Arenal and beyond. Most lodges can help you arrange any of the local tours and activities. Without a car, transportation can be a bit of a problem.

First, I got to say, F**K YOU! You know, just so we're clear on what I think of your recommendation(s). After reading your BULLSHIT, my first inclination was to list ALL the GREAT things about La Fortuna but that seemed so defensive and grade-school like. So I decided to go with, "Sticks and stones may break my bones....." BUT really, you should be ashamed of yourself for writing such a blatantly untrue and deceptive review of La Fortuna. Obviously, I live here, I know you're full of shit...but most people don't have the foggiest idea of La Fortuna and they're going to take what you have written as the truth. Did I say , "fuck you"? For instance, your statement doesn't even make sense logistically for just the fact you tell people to stay in Nuevo Arenal and 'beyond' but do the tours in Fortuna... and you state it as such, "without a car, transportation can be a bit of a problem." NO SHIT DUMBASS. I could go on and on.....

I just want to know how you got the gig to write for a travel guide in the first place, you clearly did NOT spend time in La Fortuna, which makes your entire 'travel book' a little suspect to say the least. Really, I have so much shit I want to say,,,but I decided to take the 'high road' and make a video instead. But PLEASE, if you EVER want to debate 'boring' La Fortuna or your 'credituals' for that matter- I'm here, anytime. Anyway, here's the video.....

CNN's VIDEO on Rancho Margot - Worth a L@@K

Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN recently did a story on Juan Sostheim owner of Rancho Margot.

Juan Sostheim (pictured above), is founder and owner of Costa Rica’s first carbon-negative company, a sustainable farm and eco-resort, Rancho Margot. Rancho Margot is about 40 minutes from La Fortuna, Costa Rica. *The above pic of Juan was done by CNN, I hope they don't mind me borrowing it.

I wrote a post back in June about Dr. Sanjay Gupta doing a piece on Rancho Margot and its owner, Juan Sostheim. We coincidentally happened to be doing some video shooting at Rancho Margot the same day Sanjay was there.

Actually, I'm going to quit writing now because the CNN video on Rancho Margot speaks for itself. It's very nicely done and definitely worth 6 minutes of your time, especially if you're into ALL things sustainable. Our video on Rancho Margot is also below but keep in mind, we were actually video-taping a Cooking Class on that day and just decided we would do a quick overview of Rancho Margot. So, next to CNN, ours is pretty weak. Oh well. ENjoY!

Rancho Margot OUR VIDEO on the Vision

If Rancho Margot is good enough for CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta to do a piece on, then obviously we need to make a video on Rancho Margot as well.

We've known about Juan Sostheim and his vision that is RANCHO MARGOT for 6 years now and have been out there numerous times... just never did a video. Hell, it's only about 40 minutes from La Fortuna so I'm not sure why. oh well.

So, 2 things. One, Dr. Gupta's piece runs on CNN on the 23rd of this month, not sure of the time. Two, I've written about Rancho Margot twice in the last few weeks and those links can be found below the video if you're interested. But if you're not sure what all the fuss is about concerning Rancho Margot, then our video, 'Rancho Margot an OVERVIEW' is the next best thing to Dr. Gupta and CNN... hehe ENjoY!

*Dr Sanjay Gupta Does Rancho Margot This post is about Rancho Margot.

*Rancho Margot and Costa Rica Cooking This post is really a cooking video with the backdrop being Rancho Margot.

Rancho Margot and Costa Rica Cooking

Well, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, did DO Costa Rica, specifically, Rancho Margot located in El Castillo, about 40 minutes outside of La Fortuna. I told you about Rancho Margot, the self-sufficient, organic Ranch and Dr. Sanjay Gupta a couple weeks ago when it just so happened that myself and D'Angelo were shooting our own videos at the Ranch on the same day Dr. Gupta was there.

Coincidentally, I ran into Rancho Margot's owner, Juan Sostheim, yesterday in La Fortuna. He told me the CNN story Dr. Gupta was doing on the Ranch would air on the 23rd of this month (I got to check on that date). I would HIGHLY recommend you check it out, Rancho Margot could just be the example of how it's all suppose to go if us humans are going to be a better guardians of our most precious resources. But more on Rancho Margo, Juan Sostheim and Dr. Gupta later.

D'Angelo and myself were out at Rancho Margot because our good friend, Scott Alan, wanted us to help him make a video for his YouTube Channel, Costa Rica Cooking.

This is Scott Alan, center, and us at a past video shoot.

Anyway, here's the video we put together for Scott Alan if you're interested, part Cooking show, part Rancho Margot. ENjoY!

Dr Sanjay Gupta does Rancho Margot

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, is Doin' Costa Rica. Yup, Gupta will be visiting Rancho Margot in El Castillo, about a 40 minute drive from La Fortuna, next to Lake Arenal, and doing a story on Rancho Margot and its owner, Juan Sostheim. I've known Juan for about 6 years and if anyone deserves to get their story out, it's Juan and his vision, which is Rancho Margot.

Here's the entrance of Rancho Margot- Self sufficient - Organic Ranch.
These couple snippets, taken from the Rancho Margot website, might give you a little insight on why Dr. Gupta would make his way to a little diamond in the rough that is Rancho Margot:
"Having traveled all over the world and witnessed the devastation that had occurred in other “paradises”, Juan Sostheim and family decided to develop Rancho Margot as a teaching community based on sustainable rural tourism and conservation."
"At Rancho Margot there are no cables or wires that come into Rancho Margot. Electricity is generated with two hydro turbines located on the ranch. Methane gas for cooking is produced with bio-digesters, and hot water is produced by heat exchangers located inside our compost ovens. We have no waste, we only have reusable resources."
Coincidentally, yours truly was out at Rancho Margot yesterday doing a little videotaping when Juan told me even BETTER news he'd just learned moments before. Rancho Margot has been OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED- the first place in ALL Costa Rica, to be certified carbon negative. That's right, not just carbon neutral but carbon negative. Nothing like leading by example.

That's the yoga center, pretty COOL I think.

Needless to say, Rancho Margot is an impressive piece of property and if you're interested in any of the following, Rancho Margot just may be a perfect place to visit and get a little education on how it 'could' be.
sustainable - carbon negative - organic - Lake Arenal - Volunteer Programs - vacation bungalows - off the beaten path - cows pigs chickens - medicinal gardens - wildlife - rainforest - Volcan Arenal - rivers - waterfalls - fishing - horses - education - agriculture - tropical plants and flowers - yoga - beautiful views - learning Spanish - and much, MUCH MORE.
I'll be writing more on Rancho Margot, this was really just an INTRO.

Arenal Hanging Bridges VIDEO

Arenal Hanging Bridges VIDEO from Travel Costa Rica Now.

Hey Everyone! As promised a few days ago, here's our video of the Arenal Hanging Bridges just outside of La Fortuna Costa Rica. I think it's fairly easy to see why we recommend the Hanging Bridges tour even if you don't see any animals. The LUSH vegatation combined with the beauty of the surrounding area including Volcan Arenal and Lake Arenal, are simply stunning @_@. But for us, it was like sugar on ceral because we did see a LOT of wildlife (Thank-you Erick Guzman)- like this RARE bird, the Juvenile Ornate Hawk Eagle:

For a second, I think he thought I was a mouse.

Anyway guys, ENjoY the video and if you're ever in the La Fortuna Costa Rica area, the Hanging Bridges just might be for you.

Zip Line in Costa Rica.... Whoo HOO!

La Fortuna has some of the BEST zip lines in the Costa Rica, like this one I'm doing now.

REALLY? You're not going to do a zip line, aka Canopy Tour while you're in Costa Rica? You realize that's sacreligious.... right?

HEY EVERYONE! Living in La Fortuna, we get the opportunity to do a LOT of adventure tours, and I gotta say...it's hard to get tired of zip lining over the rainforest. If it's NOT on your 'bucket list', maybe it should be.... it really is ALL THAT!

When we went on this tour there was this older lady with us....I would say 75 at least. She was with another woman, also older. One did the zipline and the other did not. Needless to say, one of them realized, LIFE IS SHORT.... the other will probably regret she didn't do it. Whatever.

I would encourage you to conquer your fears, you'll be HAPPY you did. This zip line is SO FUN... trust me. CHECK OUT the VIDEO...I think you'll AGREE.

If you are interested in doing this zip line while you're in the La Fortuna/Arenal Area... you can watch this next video and see how you can do it on the CHEAP!

Nuevo Arenal Costa Rica Moyas Place

A view of Lake Arenal taken in the Nuevo Arenal area.

Nuevo Arenal Costa Rica isn't exactly a tourist destination but they do have some things to offer in their own right. Actually, it's probably better known for a great place to live if all the gringo's who have laid down roots there are any indication.

Since they sit on Lake Arenal, Nuevo Arenal does have a lot of water activities to offer like kayaking, fishing, wake boarding and if you didn't know, Lake Arenal has some of the BEST windsurfing on the planet. As I mentioned, there's a lot of gringo's there and many started up restaurants. Which is a good thing since Costa Rica isn't exactly known for their fine cuisine.

Like this one, Moya's Place, which you don't want to miss if you're in the Nuevo Arenal Area. By the way, if you're not sure where Nuevo Arenal is, watch the video, we show you its exact location. ENjoY!

The Gingerbread - One of the BEST Restaurants in Costa Rica

The Gingerbread in Nuevo Arenal Costa Rica has some of the BEST food in the entire country.

Costa Rica is NOT known for its fine cuisine, PERIOD and after about 4 days of experiencing rice and beans 3 times a day, everyday, most tourists would LOVE to chance on a Mickey D's, although few would admit to it for obvious reasons.

Most who visit Costa Rica want to experience EVERYTHING Costa Rica, McDonald's is NOT it.

Personally, I think the perception that Costa Rica food is bland and not tasty is greatly exaggerated and I will tell you why in a future post. But I will admit there is something about eating rice and beans first thing in the morning... anyway...

We were filming at Villa Decary, located about 45 minutes from La Fortuna going around Lake Arenal towards Tilaran and Canas. As luck would have it, a mere 4-minute walk from Villa Decary is perhaps one of the BEST restaurants in Costa Rica, The Gingerbread. Here's our impromptu video of, 'The Gingerbread'.

Hotel Villa Decary in Nuevo Arenal

Villa Decary is about 45 minutes from La Fortuna Costa Rica and just a mile or so from Nuevo Arenal. One of the views from Villa Decary of Lake Arenal.

Villa Decary describes itself as a country inn but it also has a bed & breakfast feel to it as well. It overlooks Lake Arenal and sits on a beautiful piece of property complete with primary rain forest, howler monkey's and about a zillion different types of birds. Villa Decary is the perfect setting to experience what Costa Rica really is all about.

As I mentioned, Villa Decary is about 45 minutes from La Fortuna and many people who stay there venture into Fortuna after breakfast, take in an adventure tour or volcano hike and head back to the hotel around dinner time. That's not to say there isn't plenty of things to do around the Nuevo Arenal area. HELLO... the lake is just outside the door. So, if you like the water, there's plenty of activities to do such as boating, fishing, boogie boarding, wind surfing (Lake Arenal is world renowned for its wind surfing)kayaking etc. There's also hiking and horseback riding in the area.

And you wouldn't want to miss eating at one of the BEST restaurants in all of Costa Rica, The Gingerbread, which is only about a 4-minute walk from Villa Decary. Really, the best food we've ever had since living in Costa Rica.

People that stay at Villa Decary are the type of people who want to fall asleep with nature and not Jay Leno. And really, that's what Costa Rica is all about.

Here's our video of Villa Decary in Nuevo Arenal:

Poison Dart Frogs and ME

La Fortuna Costa Rica has its fair share of Poison Dart Frogs... but luckily, there's only ONE michael alan.

love, Love, LOVE the Strawberry poison dart frog. Well, around La Fortuna Costa Rica, we call it the 'Blue Jean Frog' for obvious reasons. Yup, it's poisonous, how poisonous depends on who you ask. And in this picture I'm eyeballing it just make sure it doesn't decide to jump in my mouth.

If you're ever in the La Fortuna/Arenal area, you can find the 'Blue Jean Frog' without a Guide if you just follow one of our travel tip videos, this one to be exact: La Fortuna Costa Rica- the Secret REVEALED. I highly recommend visiting 'Salto' regardless if you're interested in frogs or NOT.

Here's some pics and INFO on the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog aka Blue Jean Frog:

This lil' Blue Jean Frog doesn't look to happy that we're taking its picture.

A Few Facts about the Dendrobates Pumilio aka, The Strawberry Poison Dart Frog or Blue Jean Frog:

* Found mostly in the tropical forests of Central America.

* Strawberry poison dart frogs are fairly little and only grow to be about 1/2 to 2 inches long. They are bright red with blue legs and are often called the "blue jean frog" because of the brightly colored top and blue legs. The beautiful, bright colors are warnings to potential predators that the frogs are poisonous.

*Poison dart frogs fertilize their eggs externally, that is to say, the female lays a clutch of eggs and a male fertilizes them afterward, in the same manner as most fish.

* Strawberry poison dart frogs take their parenting seriously (taken from the folks at WIKI):

The red-and-blue poison-arrow frog (Dendrobates pumilio) carry their newly hatched tadpoles into the canopy. The tadpoles stick to the mucus on the back of their parents. Once in the upper reaches of the rainforest trees the parents deposit their young in the pools of water that accumulate in epiphytic plants such as bromeliads. The tadpoles feed on invertebrates in their arboreal nursery and their mother will even supplement their diet by depositing eggs into the water.

* Strawberry poison dart frogs are diurnal which means they're active during the day, unlike most frogs that are nocturnal (active during the night).

* They use their long sticky tongues to capture preys like spiders, small insects, ants, termites and small crickets. According to scientists, these insects acquire the poison from their plant diet, which can be the source of toxicity in poison dart frog.

* Male Strawberry poison dart frogs are extremely territorial and will wrestle other males for territorial rights.

* The lifespan of the Strawberry poison dart frog seems to be speculative at best, I've read anywhere from 3-16 years in the wild and up to 35 years in captivity. In captivity they tend to lose their poisonous toxins due to diet.

The BEAUTY of the Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano, aka Volcan Arenal, in La Fortuna Costa Rica is truly a sight to BEHOLD.

D'Angelo and myself have lived in La Fortuna Costa Rica, home of the Arenal Volcano, for almost 5 years now. It's safe to say we LOVE it and having the Arenal Volcano outside our door is probably one of the BIGGER reasons we're enamored with the La Fortuna area in general.

They say, and I believe it to be TRUE (I've been to 'Burning Man'), that 'words' don't describe the BEST of things and this DEFINITELY holds true when attempting to describe the Arenal Volcano. Someone can tell you about it and even show pictures or videos but to me they usually just don't do it the justice it deserves. BUT to see the volcano for yourself at sunset or when the morning sun is hitting it just right, or the lightening is STRIKing all around it during a storm, well, that's where words just don't cut it. You have to experience Arenal and see it for yourself.

When Volcan Arenal erupts (which is approximately between 20-40 times a day), it's way COOL, but for me, just gazing on its magnificence and grandeur is MORE than enough. The Arenal Volcano is one of the view volcanoes I've seen that would be worth visiting even if it NEVER erupted- yeah, I said it.

Here's a series of 4 short videos of the Arenal Volcano (just to give you an idea):
