La Fortuna Costa Rica Things to Do on Lake Arenal

TRUTH is, LOTS of things to do in La Fortuna Costa Rica. Here's a few things- Canyoneering, Ziplining, Hanging Bridges, Volcano hike, horseback riding, ATV's, night hikes, rafting etc, and those things don't even account for the activities available on Lake Arenal. Well, there's a NEW player in town and it's Flyboarding, which I'm attempting to do in this pic. Have you heard of it? Well, anyway, CHECK out the video to get the gist of flyboards and if you're ever in the La Fortuna area and want to try something different, give us a shoutOUT and we'll hook you up. *And yes, just about anyone can do it.

The Police in Costa Rica Won't Do SHIT

Fact is, the police in Costa Rica aren't going to do shit to help you if their has been a crime perpetrated against you. I'm talking mostly about the sort of crime that you have the best odds of being the victim of- robbery, theft, breaking and entering, simple assault etc. Yes, they can be friendly and nice, yes they will fill out all the appropriate paperwork, but unfortunately, that's where it STOPS. There's many reasons for their lack of any concrete follow-thru but that's for another video and another post. So, whether you want to travel to Costa Rica or live in Costa Rica, it's all about taking personal responsibility. Here's our perspective on the effectiveness of the police in Costa Rica.

Pital Costa Rica Thief and Robber Juan Carlos Salazar Mena

This is what a thief looks like and Juan Carlos Salazar Mena is a THIEF. Juan Carlos Salazar Mena is originally from Pital Costa Rica but spends time in Aguas Zarcas and La Fortuna.

After videotaping Juan Carlos Salazar Mena breaking into our apartment in La Fortuna, the emails started pouring in. Apparently, Juan Carlos Salazar Mena has robbed many other folks and businesses. Juan Carlos Mena doesn't just focus on Gringos, a Tico man reached out to us in hopes of helping us put Juan Carlos Mena behind bars because he had broken into his business as well, also videotaped and CAUGHT. But Costa Rica being Costa Rica, absolutely NOTHING was done.(We will be posting that video on our YouTube Channel as well, so L@@L for it).

The first video below is actually the second video we did in regards to Juan Carlos Salazar Mena and is an update 4 days after the initial break-in with the bottom video being the break-in caught on tape.

Juan Carlos Salazar Mena is a skinny little punk, unassuming but extremely sneaky and conniving, so if he's around your area, you're going to either want to beat the fuck out of him or at least keep a watchful eye on his every move. And if you do happen to cross paths with Juan Carlos Salazar Mena, please contact us, we'd love to chat with him **just to ask him why he chose a life of crime, nothing more**Swear, nothing bad.

We're not going to let this go until justice comes to Juan Carlos Salazar Mena, he's hurt WAY too many people- hard working people trying to make their way in life. Motherfucker needs a life lesson.

Juan Carlos Salazar Mena from Pital Costa Rica is a THIEF

Juan Carlos Salazar Mena from Pital Costa Rica is a THIEF. Juan Carlos Salazar Mena lives in La Fortuna Costa Rica at the moment but also spends time in Pital, Aguas Zarcas and Manuel Antonio. Juan Carlos Salazar Mena is not just a one-time thief, he's more of the 'career' variety. And like all thieves, Juan Carlos Salazar Mena is a shifty, sneaky, sketchy, scumbag.

Juan Carlos Salazar Mena lived next door to us with his girlfriend. Juan Carlos Salazar Mena from Pital broke into our apartment months back and stole a laptop. We knew it was him but couldn't prove anything. We knew he'd be back as that's what scumbag thieves like Juan Carlos Salazar Mena do. We were ready. And the below video is the result. If there's any doubt in your mind just watch the video until the tattoo of the 'star' above his left breast shows up.

The police in La Fortuna are very familiar with Juan Carlos Salazar Mena. He gets busted a LOT. Unfortunately, nothing happens except maybe a night at the police station. Totally worth something like a laptop. The police saw the video, knew right away who it was. The OIJ (the FBI of Costa Rica)also saw the video. They did NOTHING. Juan Carlos Salazar Mena spent 24 hours at the police station while the police and the OIJ twiddled their thumbs. *We are not surprised by the lack of follow-up by the police and OIJ by any means. They're in name only, real police work is foreign to Costa Rica and is well documented. We will be documenting the same.

This isn't over. We will be documenting what happens AND we will get a lawyer. And no, we are not disillusioned by Costa Rica. We still love it here, so don't go there. The video of the break in is below. Check it out. Share it, pass it on. God forbid some unexpected business hires Juan Carlos Salazar Mena.

Power Wheels ATV Tour La Fortuna Costa Rica

Power Wheels in La Fortuna is the BEST ATV tour in the area, maybe in all Costa Rica (we'll have to get back to you on that one). We take the places we recommend very seriously since it's pretty much our reputation on the line so we take great care in regards to what we say about who. Fact is, we've been on the other ATV tours in the area and Power Wheels is the best, simple as that. The biggest reason Power Wheels is the best is probably because of the area they use do run their tours- it's simply BEAUTIFUL.

I could write or you could just CHECK OUT the video we did....and I'm sure you'll get the picture.

BEST ATV Tour in Costa Rica

The BEST ATV Tour in Costa Rica has to be the one in La Fortuna and "NO", it's NOT La Pradera, (not that you've really heard of that one either) but La Pradera does happen to be the BIGGEST and the one you usually run into on the internet but just NOT the BEST. Obviously we haven't been on every ATV tour in Costa Rica and their could be other great ones, so yeah, 'BEST' might be a little overly dramatic but believe me, this one I just went on is about 5-steps above most. And the fact that many are just average is the reason we've never really endorsed one before.

So, here's the SC@@P- When D'Angelo returns from visiting relatives in New York we will make the video and you'll see why we say what we do. In the meantime, if you're going to be in La Fortuna and are interested... let us know. Pura Vida!

MORE Cheap Good Food in La Fortuna - Video

Costa Rica is EXPENSIVE. Wish I had a dime... And it's true, it can be but it doesn't have to be. And La Fortuna gets the same rap. Especially when it comes to food. We live here, we see the folks who bitch about the cost, it's usually the tourists who did very little preparation for their vacation, trusting the guide books, or else they're being lead from tourist trap to tourist trap by someone working off commissions.

If they did their homework or watched our videos, they'd know about this place, La Hormiga (the Ant), a little family run Soda that we go to just about everyday. Seriously, everyday. Why, because like many of you who travel on a budget, we don't have a ton of money to waste on over-priced food and when we eat, we need something that gets us to the next meal. And really, even if you have money, La Hormiga is a great way to experience the local flavor.

Anyway, here's our video about cheap, good food in La Fortuna at La Hormiga-

FIRE! at Just Good Food

There was a fire at 'Just Good Food' in La Fortuna early this morning and just between me and you, it has 'sketchy' written all over it. I heard the FBI will be investigating so we'll see, but for now, I'll keep my thoughts to myself. If you don't know, 'Just Good Food' is a small, soda-style, pizza/hamburger joint where a lot of us gringos like to hang-out and drink too much. For the tourist visiting La Fortuna, it's cheap, decent eats for those traveling on a budget.

The owner of 'Just Good Food', Mike, is a friend and I feel bad for him and his family because really, it's been one thing after another since he took over the restaurant about 9 months ago so it definitely hasn't been the easiest of rides. Every time things seemed to be looking up for the restaurant- another issue. You know, 2-steps forward, 3-steps back.

Hopefully he'll rebuild, we'll see. The kitchen didn't seem to get damaged, it appears to be mostly the ceiling and roof area so to me it looks worse than it actually is.. but obviously that's totally speculative.

Anyway, the first video pertains to the fire, the second was made by D'Angelo and myself to help 'Just Good Food' get the word out and the last video is an interview I did with Mike about how things were going for him at the time. The last video explains some of the issues/problems he's had to deal with since taking over the restaurant.

Eco Termales Hot Springs UPDATED

We like to say Eco Termales Hot Springs in La Fortuna is like a baby Tabacon.

I've written about Eco Termales before and likewise, we also did a video on them a couple years back (see below). The 'couple years back' video is informative but we shot it at night and it's pretty dark so we decided to update and show Eco Termales in the daytime. Although technically, on a side note, we like to go to the hot springs at night, we think it much more beautiful.

But anyway, without further ado our UPDATED video of Eco Termales in La Fortuna.

New Gay and Straight Friendly Hotel in La Fortuna

La Fortuna Suites, a really cute and comfortable B&B in La Fortuna Costa Rica.

Well, we're EXCITED! Why? Because La Fortuna Suites is truly gay-friendly. Don't get me wrong, they're VERY straight-friendly as well, but we haven't had anything remotely 'gay' since Abercam, which closed its doors about 4 years ago. So needles to say, it's kind of nice to have a little 'gay' anything around La Fortuna- fills a HUGE void here. Plus, we really like the owners, Jessy and Bob, not only are they great guys, but their 'attention to detail' throughout La Fortuna Suites really speaks to their personalities as they really go out of their way to make folks feel comfortable... Anyway, check out our video on La Fortuna Suites, the very gay-friendly, straight-friendly AND kid-friendly B&B in La Fortuna.

Our Vacation Rental in Fortuna pt. 2

Our Vacation Rental in La Fortuna Costa Rica.

Our first video about our vacation rental property took some crap. I think it was something about, 'unprofessional' and of course the 'drinking/drunk' thing. Whoops! We didn't mean anything by it, just trying to show our real life here in Costa Rica- zits and ALL. I guess some folks don't like that, they'd rather see a glossed over picture of paradise. lo que sea.

I know this looks like FUN but this took 4 days with 3 people doing it...so glad it's done.

So, like the video below will show, we've been busy, VERY BUSY. BTW- the fist pic is a view of the back of the house. It's looking pretty good, but landscaping will be an ongoing thing, too many beautiful plants/flowers/trees and the plan is to LUSH the property out- we're well on our way. But really, we can't wait until our next video to show you the inside- COMPLETED.

Here's the second installment video of our vacation rental property in La Fortuna Costa Rica:

La Fortuna Costa Rica Boring as F**K

La Fortuna Costa Rica, boring as FUCK.

To the folks at 'Open Road Travel Guide' and specifically, 'Open Road's Best of Costa Rica' Travel Book,

You wrote this about La Fortuna Costa Rica:
Boring Fortuna. Fortuna is an uninteresting tourism-support town, which is useful for booking tours but not much else. Stay somewhere closer to the volcano, where you might see some action if the clouds ever clear up. The interesting places to stay are on the way to the lake, towards the town of Nuevo Arenal and beyond. Most lodges can help you arrange any of the local tours and activities. Without a car, transportation can be a bit of a problem.

First, I got to say, F**K YOU! You know, just so we're clear on what I think of your recommendation(s). After reading your BULLSHIT, my first inclination was to list ALL the GREAT things about La Fortuna but that seemed so defensive and grade-school like. So I decided to go with, "Sticks and stones may break my bones....." BUT really, you should be ashamed of yourself for writing such a blatantly untrue and deceptive review of La Fortuna. Obviously, I live here, I know you're full of shit...but most people don't have the foggiest idea of La Fortuna and they're going to take what you have written as the truth. Did I say , "fuck you"? For instance, your statement doesn't even make sense logistically for just the fact you tell people to stay in Nuevo Arenal and 'beyond' but do the tours in Fortuna... and you state it as such, "without a car, transportation can be a bit of a problem." NO SHIT DUMBASS. I could go on and on.....

I just want to know how you got the gig to write for a travel guide in the first place, you clearly did NOT spend time in La Fortuna, which makes your entire 'travel book' a little suspect to say the least. Really, I have so much shit I want to say,,,but I decided to take the 'high road' and make a video instead. But PLEASE, if you EVER want to debate 'boring' La Fortuna or your 'credituals' for that matter- I'm here, anytime. Anyway, here's the video.....

Horseback Ride to Fortuna Waterfall VIDEO

Riding horses in La Fortuna Costa Rica under the shadow of the Arenal Volcano.

D'Angelo and I hadn't been horseback riding since we first came to La Fortuna about 7 years ago, so when we got the opportunity last week to check out one of the horseback riding tours here, we jumped at the chance to saddle up again... of course with cameras in tow.

Check it out, nice little video I think. Especially like the shot of the horse 'yawning'.

Our Vacation Rental VIDEO Gets Harsh Feedback

michael alan and D'Angelo (Travel Costa Rica NOW) have a vacation rental property in La Fortuna Costa Rica.

Yup, we now have a vacation rental property in La Fortuna, so we decided to do a preliminary video about it, which is below. We posted it yesterday and received this message on Facebook from a guy we don't know:
"This video is not professional and does not represent either of you or your business. Why would you want to show anyone the mess, refer to it as “this fucking house,” and expect anyone to want to rent anything from you? I would delete it immediately. When you sober up and look at it again, you will agree."
First I want to say, we put ourselves out there with what we do and realize we're going to get the spectrum of feedback, folks who love us, those that don't and everything between. In other words, we're fine with taking the good with the bad- to us it's all GOOD and if we can't take it, we shouldn't be doing it. And really, most of the feedback we receive is extremely positive anyway.

To be honest, this comment irked me a little and I'll tell you why. We have over 240 informative videos and THOUSAND + pages (blogs/website) about traveling and living in Costa Rica. We have maybe 3 videos like this one and I'm thinking if he knew our 'body of work' so to speak, he wouldn't be judging so harshly.

So we have this new vacation rental property that's about 2 months away from being ready to rent. We need furniture, decorations, a little minor repairs and landscaping (we're totally going to LUSH it out the grounds). We started the renovation but wanted to show you the place even though at this point it's basically a mess. We'll be doing 2 more videos as things progress and the quality of the videos will progress as well. But on this particular 'first video' we decided to do it raw. If this video was about the effects of Dengue on a 10-year old in Costa Rica, we would have been 'professional'
but to get friends to help you with your house for FREE, you need a LOT of pizza and beer... and we had it. D'Angelo and myself work very hard- everyday. Really. Everyday. And since we weren't doing a Dengue video, we had a little fun and yes, had a few too many beers. Work hard - Play hard. We deserve it from time to time. I guess what I'm trying to say is, D'Angelo and myself are 'real' people, living a 'real' life in a foreign country and struggling everyday to make it work. We're not trying to be 'slick' but it's true, we have a couple videos that are not very professional. So what? At least we're 'real' and we are honest. We don't have an agenda like most every Costa Rica website on the internet today, but even if we did have an agenda, we'd tell you what it was. And I got news for you, this IS us and we don't expect anything. I'm also sober enough to know I'd rather drink with my friends and be unprofessional from time to time then be who you think I'm suppose to be to make you happy. So the video stays. But really, feel free to stay off our channel and our sites and FaceBook.

Here's our video about our new vacation rental in La Fortuna. BE WARNED- If you don't appreciate beer and unprofessionalism, don't watch, you'll be so disappointed with us.

CNN's VIDEO on Rancho Margot - Worth a L@@K

Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN recently did a story on Juan Sostheim owner of Rancho Margot.

Juan Sostheim (pictured above), is founder and owner of Costa Rica’s first carbon-negative company, a sustainable farm and eco-resort, Rancho Margot. Rancho Margot is about 40 minutes from La Fortuna, Costa Rica. *The above pic of Juan was done by CNN, I hope they don't mind me borrowing it.

I wrote a post back in June about Dr. Sanjay Gupta doing a piece on Rancho Margot and its owner, Juan Sostheim. We coincidentally happened to be doing some video shooting at Rancho Margot the same day Sanjay was there.

Actually, I'm going to quit writing now because the CNN video on Rancho Margot speaks for itself. It's very nicely done and definitely worth 6 minutes of your time, especially if you're into ALL things sustainable. Our video on Rancho Margot is also below but keep in mind, we were actually video-taping a Cooking Class on that day and just decided we would do a quick overview of Rancho Margot. So, next to CNN, ours is pretty weak. Oh well. ENjoY!

My Friend Wants to KILL Himself FOR REAL

Maybe in Costa Rica, suicide IS painless.

His name is Max but everyone calls him, 'Ime'. As he tells it, a nickname his first wife gave him because she said he was a selfish prick who only thought of himself; hence, I + me = Ime. He obviously doesn't mind 'the bash' since he introduces himself as such. I don't know, maybe he thinks it's true. Anyway, doesn't really matter, but what does matter is Max wants to KILL himself. I'm not sure I totally appreciate the fact he confided in me, because truthfully, it's a little much, but I do understand why he chose me to tell. Ime is my age, 52.

I've known Ime for about 7 months and like me, he's lived in Costa Rica for about 7 years. We became fast friends and actually, he's my only true friend I have here in Costa Rica. I don't toss the word 'friend' around like many seem to do, I would call most people I associate with here, good acquaintances... whatever. In my world, friends are people who are with you regardless, and when I say regardless, I mean REGARDLESS ... and that's Ime. I can tell him anything and vice versa... and there's no bullshit involved. I like that. It's as if we've been friends forever. Intellectually, Ime is much smarter than me, he literally knows a LOT of shit and even if he doesn't, his bullshit usually rings true, so most wouldn't know to call him OUT on it anyway. He's the guy who's going to win Trivial Pursuit- you know the type. BUT, I have him in emotional intelligence, so the fact he can explain in detail how the universe all fits together or how to kill someone with dental floss, he needs me to help with 'perspective and understanding'....so needless to say, we get along like peas and a fork.

Ironic, it was one of our first 'deep' conversations. Unfortunately, it was laced with extreme amounts of rum and cokes, so I couldn't see any red flags and the nuances are WAY vague but the conversation was about suicide...and I don't have to guess what I said, as my thoughts on the subject are vastly different from the majority thinking.. but since Ime isn't usually in the majority thinking, we had exactly the same thoughts on the matter. I'm thinking that's why he confided in me.

A few more tidbits about Ime. Like many people who come to Costa Rica, Ime seems to have money. I know in his past life he consulted and did well in real estate but he doesn't work here in Costa Rica. Ime has a really nice place outside of town and doesn't seem to want for anything. I know he did the family thing but he never talked about his kids or his ex-wife's and I've never felt inclined to bring them up. One thing Ime does do here, and very well, is drink. You would call him an alcoholic, I would say alcoholics go to meetings, Ime's a drinker. Just one more thing we have in common.

Anyway, I do feel sorry for folks who kill themselves because of feelings of hopelessness. But I also believe many people are like Ime (and me), he's just done. And that's exactly how he explained it to me. "Michael, I've done what I've wanted, I've been in love, had good friends and family... there's nothing more on my bucket list. I'm not depressed and I'm not mad or running from anything.... I'm just done."

I can totally understand Ime's way of THINKNG

Sorry, let me get to the point of all this. Ime hasn't asked my advice and believe me, he didn't tell me in order to try and have me talk him out of it, he's not looking for sympathy or seeking attention, I know him, he's serious, he just asked me to do a few things for him after he does do it. Bottom line- Ime will kill himself- it's a given. He merely wants me to explain it to his mother.... he wants me to tell her he's good, no problems...not sad or depressed or any of the regular reasons people decide to put a bullet in their brain...he wants me to tell her his life 'was' good....but as he described it to me, he's 'like a woman who knows when it's time to leave'.... he says it's his time to leave.

Ime does appreciate my perspective and really, I only had to recommendations: First, why don't you wait until your mother dies FIRST, why do this now... I remember thinking, 'selfish much'? He just answered, "that's why I want you to talk to her, tell her not to be sad......"

Gee, thanx friend.

I also advised against pills or guns...do the hose in the exhaust, it's a little more 'user' friendly. He laughed and said that's exactly how it's going to go.

Believe me, I know this post sounds a little 'flippant'...but you know, it's the reality of things and really, what do you expect when you put 2 Libertarians/Atheists in the same room.... yikes.

I would love to hear your thoughts. Not sure it's going to change anything... but please, TALK to me.

PS. I believe Ime when he says he's done,,,,, but I recall this video I made with my friend, Bill, awhile back...sheer BOREDOM could also be doing it to Ime.

BIG MISTAKE Taking Over a Business in Costa Rica?

Living in La Fortuna, D'Angelo and I have seen a lot of gringos come and go... a LOT. I would say the majority of those folks left with their tail between their legs due to making bad investment(s) and losing everything (usually from not doing their homework btw), others, drawn by the prospect of paradise and quickly realizing that toucans flying by your window during morning coffee doesn't offset
the frustration of the continuous red-tape, not to mention money, it takes to get things done in Costa Rica. A few, not only left Costa Rica but exited the planet by their own hand, unable to deal.... very sad to say the least. There's even a few who WANT to leave but can't, stuck in a kind of limbo between heaven and hell, making just enough to get by but not enough to make a change, barely surviving. Us, we can seriously relate to the first and last groups... but I digress.

Anyway, I love doing these expat interviews because each person has a unique and interesting story on how they found their way to Costa Rica. On this day I'm interviewing Mike, the new owner of 'Just Good Food' a little soda-style restaurant here in La Fortuna. (Coincidentally, we made a video for 'Just Good Food' about a year ago, it's below if you're interested). Mike's only been here a few months but trust me, he's learned a lot in a short period of time, so you're not going to want to miss what he has to say about his experience buying a 'turn-key' business in a foreign land... especially if you're thinking about coming to Costa Rica and possibly doing the same. ENjoY! btw if you ever happen to be in the La Fortuna area, stop in 'Just Good Food', have a bite to eat and a beer and give Mike a Shout-Out, he's great to chat with and you'll be glad you took the time.

Here's the 'Just Good Food' Video we did about a year ago.

My FAVORITE Email So Far

Ryan Malcolm, lead singer of 'Low Level Flight', and WINNER of the first Canadian IDOL, emailed to tell us he'd been watching some of our videos and they've been helpful in making his upcoming plans to visit Costa Rica. He also asked us for some advice on some of the area hotels..... but don't worry, our knowledge of 'area hotels' is not the point of this post.

To me this email is COOL for a couple reasons. Just the fact people watch our videos is pretty SWEET and of course I love all the people we get to meet and connect with that otherwise we probably wouldn't, as is this case. But this particular email is even a little more SPECIAL to me. Here's why.

I've mentioned it before but I'm a HUGE music person. I LOVE music. It speaks to me.
“Without music, life would be a mistake.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.” ― Maya Angelou
“People haven't always been there for me but music always has.” ― Taylor Swift
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” - Plato
I know, for some a little over-dramatic, but for me it's true. I love music like people love their pets.

So this email is how I got connected with 'Low Level Flight'. Thank-you Ryan Malcolm for liking our stuff... but I think I like yours a LOT more. So Thank-YOU and have fun in Costa Rica.
